Timeline

2006

The Oxford e-Research Centre (OeRC) is founded.

c. 2018

OeRC begins to consolidate its role in supporting researchers with AI, data science, and HPC.

2023

OeRC, led by Prof. Sansone, formally launches the 'AI Competency Centre' (AICC) in response to the rise of generative AI.

2024

The AICC establishes 'AI Clinics' to provide one-on-one support for researchers across all divisions (Humanities, MPLS, etc.).

2024

AICC begins running regular workshops on 'Introduction to AI for Researchers' and 'Using LLMs in Research'.

Nov 2025

AICC lists a series of training workshops, including 'Beyond Detection: Navigating AI Tools' and 'Quick Guide to Multimodal AI'.

Events

  • (Past Event) Quick Guide to Multimodal AI: Images, Speech, and Video Capabilities in Large Language Models (Nov 11, 2025)

  • (Past Event) Beyond Detection: Navigating AI Tools and Ethical Practice in Education (Nov 5, 2025)

Influential Papers / Notable Research

  • Provides AI training, workshops, and 'AI Clinics' to researchers across all university divisions.

  • Manages high-performance computing (HPC) and GPU resources essential for large-scale AI research.

  • Develops and promotes 'FAIR' (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) data principles for AI projects.

  • Provides researchers with access to and training on specific AI tools (e.g., large language models, computer vision models).

  • Develops 'best practice' guides and reusable code templates for deploying AI responsibly.

  • Runs 'AI Clinics' where researchers can get 1-on-1 support for their specific projects.
